Arc Flash Injuries Are Happening Daily

As I'm monitoring the news about workplace injuries I can't help but notice that nearly every day at least one arc flash injury is reported.  In this morning's news there is a report from WNEM-TV, Saginaw, MI about contractors working at Wal-Mart being injured in an electrical explosion (read it here) that sounds like it was an arc flash.

Be careful.  Be sure the employees in your facility are completely trained. But another thing I'm noticing is that in many cases it is contractors who are injured.  If you are hiring a contractor to work on electrical systems consider asking about the arc flash training the contractor's employees have received.  Make their training a part of the evaluation process you use in selecting a contractor.

Arc flash is serious.  It is unexpected.  It can happen in systems at voltages as low as 50 volts. Be sure electrical systems are locked out before anyone works on them. If that is not possible ensure all necessary precautions and safety measures have been taken.

Good point! You are responsible for the safety of the contractor to some extent. Even if all of your employees are well trained, you should make sure that everyone else you work with is as well.
