Arc Flash and Molten Metal — The Hidden Hazard

An article published May 1st in Occupational Health & Safety Magazine discusses the latest information about arc flash injuries and in particular the effect of molten metal has on the potential for an arc flash to cause a fatal injury.

The article points out that an accident is likely to be fatal when more than 50% of the body receives a 2nd or 3rd degree burn -- and the body area from the belt up is typically 50-60% of the body area.  Thus having adequate upper body protection is important.  The article discusses information from recent arc flash studies on molten metal and looks at the interaction between molten metal and clothing.

It seems obvious really, but definitely puts into perspective how arc flashes are dangerous.

Personally I had only thought of molten metal as dangerous because of its temperature, not in terms of it igniting clothing.
